Abu Simbel Day Tour from Aswan
10 hours
Overview
Located 280 km south of Aswan — approximately a 3 to 4-hour drive through the dramatic Nubian desert — Abu Simbel is one of the most extraordinary and remote archaeological sites in all of Egypt. Carved directly into the mountainside by King Ramesses II in the 13th century BC, this magnificent temple complex was dedicated to Ramesses II himself and his beloved wife, Queen Nefertari, and stands today as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic monuments of the ancient world.
The Great Temple of Ramesses II is immediately recognisable by its four colossal seated statues of the pharaoh carved into the rockface — each standing over 20 metres tall — guarding the entrance to the temple. Inside, the walls are covered with magnificent reliefs depicting scenes from Ramesses II's reign, showcasing his divine power, military victories — including the famous Battle of Kadesh against the Hittites — and his deep religious devotion. The smaller but equally breathtaking Temple of Hathor and Nefertari stands beside it, dedicated to Ramesses' wife and the goddess Hathor.
One of the most remarkable facts about Abu Simbel is the extraordinary astronomical alignment of the Great Temple. Twice a year — on 22 February (the King's birthday) and 22 October (his coronation anniversary) — sunlight penetrates the inner sanctuary and illuminates the statues of Ramesses II and the gods, leaving only the statue of Ptah (the god of darkness) in shadow. This incredible feat of ancient astronomical engineering has astonished the world for centuries.
Equally extraordinary is the story of the temples' relocation in the 1960s. When the construction of the Aswan High Dam threatened to submerge Abu Simbel beneath the waters of Lake Nasser, a massive UNESCO-led international rescue operation carefully dismantled the temples and moved them to higher ground — piece by piece — in one of the greatest feats of archaeological engineering in history.
